LASIK Candidacy: 4 Things Eye Doctors Consider

Have you always worn eyeglasses or contact lenses? Have you wondered what it would be like to wake up in the morning and not have to slide on a pair of glasses or slip in the contacts before your day begins? If so, it may be possible for something like that to actually happen thanks to a procedure called LASIK. It is a surgical procedure that corrects problems with your vision and allows you to see perfectly without contacts or eyeglasses. First, though, you need to determine if you are a candidate and if the treatment is right for you. Here are a few signs that you may benefit from the LASIK surgical procedure.

Shape of Your Cornea

With LASIK, issues with vision are repaired by the reshaping of the cornea, and the cornea is responsible for focusing light to produce the image in the retina. If your cornea has the improper texture or is misshaped, then your results may be distorted. So, to determine if you are a candidate for the procedure, your eye doctor will take a look at your cornea and make sure that it is of proper thickness for reshaping.

Your Age

Your age is another deciding factor when it comes to determining your candidacy for LASIK. Unlike other factors, this is more of a case-by-case basis, but there are certain risk factors associated with age when it comes to LASIK, as there is with any kind of surgery. With LASIK, the most successful procedures tend to be with individuals who are between 18 and 40 years of age. This is simply due to the fact that the eyes are still developing when you are under 18 years old and there is a higher risk of complications when you are over 40 years of age.

Stability of Previous Prescriptions

As you get older, your vision will undergo some changes—even if they are relatively minor. Prior to undergoing LASIK surgery, your eye doctor will need to ensure that your vision prescription over the years hasn't changed significantly, especially in the year prior to the surgery. These previous 12 months are important. The more stable your vision has been, the more accurate the results will be from the surgical procedure.

General Well-Being

Your overall health will also come into play when determining your candidacy for LASIK. Surgical results can be impacted if you have certain health conditions like autoimmune diseases, diabetes, and the like. Therefore, it is important to share your complete medical history with your eye doctor during the initial assessment.

About Me

I started noticing problems with my eyesight a few months ago, but I wasn't sure where I needed to go to get help. Fortunately, a friend of mine recommended a great optometrist, and I went in for a comprehensive eye exam. It was really interesting to see how much of a difference it made to meet with a real professional, and it was helpful. I went through and received a diagnosis for a serious eye condition, and the treatments really helped me to heal. This blog is all about learning about different eye problems and seeking the help that you need.
